In an moment of high farce that is traditionally cited as an example of how out of touch the French aristocracy was Marie Antoinette is said to have suggested 'let them eat cake', when faced with the starvation of the peasantry, due to a lack of bread. Now I'm no fan of letting poor people starve to death, but if India thinks it can trouser a billion quid of our money, and then shaft us on a £13 billion fighter jet deal, then I say maybe they should try to feed their starving millions with French aeroplanes. And then there is the huge amount of cash they spend on their nuclear programme! How can this dysfunctional nation claim to be a 'first world' power, while it ignores millions of its citizens dieing of disease and starvation in slums, while its elites dine at the international top table?
Seriously, it's about time we woke up and realised what's going on. We are economically uncompetitive against these countries, but it's no surprise! The model appears to go something like this: we pay to look after their social problems, and freed from the financial burden their middle classes take us to the cleaners. Through aid we feed and cloth their poor (because they refuse to do it), send them medicines, and fix things up when their skimping on infrastructure sees them devastated by natural disasters.
The French queen was clearly out of touch, and paid the price at the guillotine, but what price are we paying for this insanity? There is no other competitive endeavour in the world where you have to help the opposition to beat you, and it's about time we stopped kidding ourselves that doling out billions in overseas aid helps anyone it is intended for. The only people who are laughing are the ones pocketing it, and believe me - that ain't funny!
