Lynn AC Boxing Club

Pimlico is pleased to sponsor the Lynn AC Boxing Club.

The club aims to offer all boxers a place to train hard, learn the skills of boxing and develop themselves as both boxers and individuals.

It’s Britain’s oldest continuing amateur boxing club, founded in 1892 in a café in London’s Borough high street. Danny Williams, best known as the man who knocked out Mike Tyson in four rounds, is one of the most well-known boxers to emerge from the club. He became British Heavy Weight Champion in 2000 and maintained his title until 2004. He later regained his British title in 2007 and defended it until May 2009.

The Lynn AC boxing club has had many other gifted young boxers pass through its doors and many major professional and ABA boxing titles have been won. The first Lynn alumnus to win a British professional title was Matt Wells, who became the lightweight champion in 1911.

“The Lynn has had so many successful champions over the years but those that I admired when I was boxing in the 1970’s were Welter Weight Terry Waller who won the ABA Championships quite a few times, Billy Night who won three consecutive ABA Light Heavy Weight titles and the late great Gary Davidson, all I can say is what a boxer what a man,” says Charlie Mullins MD of Pimlico.

Pimlico is heavily involved in the training and mentoring of upcoming boxers at the South London club. Samm Mullins, Plumber and son of Charlie Mullins, is Head Coach at Lynn AC. A former boxer himself, Samm retired from competing 10 years ago due to injury and has since become qualified to advance coach level.

“Pimlico has been a sponsor of Lynn AC for many years, there is so much enthusiasm in amateur boxing and I’ve been lucky enough to work with all the inspiring young boxers who are coming through the club,” says Samm Mullins.

The Lynn’s brightest prospects and future champions include 22 year old Light Heavy Weight Obed Mbwakongo who already has some major boxing achievements under his belt. Cai Cheal is one of the club's most talented boxers and is currently training for the CYP National Finals 2010.

The club also has a great junior squad coming through who want to be as good as the seniors. Both Light Welter Weight Chris Mbwakongo and Light Flyweight Gerry McDonagh won the 2010 Royal Navy Junior Championships for their divisions. Frankie Newman, 13 year old Chris McDonagh and Elliot Reid have between them fought for and won numerous championships and titles.

The club also has some first-class female boxers and Samm is currently working with 20 year old ABA Champion Ruth Raper from London and 29 year old American Geneve Brossard.

"I was quite against women's boxing and then I had two ladies come down to our gym. As soon as they joined they were told they were going to be treated exactly the same as the lads and they've been brilliant. Now I'm a firm believer that if anyone wants to box they should really give it a go as it's a brilliant sport,” says Samm.

Ruth Raper and Obed Mbwakongo are not only ABA Champions they are also strong contenders for the 2012 Games and are both in the GB Olympic Squad.

“Both Ruth and Obed stand a great chance and we’ve committed to an intense training programme, to ensure that they are top of their fitness for the games,” says Samm.

Samm has transformed the Lynn AC and it is certainly the most successful club in London at the moment. Under the leadership of Samm and his fellow coaches Gary Hale, Darran Langley, Frankie Shaw and Terry Palmer it has the potential to be one of the best in the country. They are all former boxers themselves and most have been coaching for many years.

“We have built a strong coaching team at Lynn AC and as anyone that knows anything about boxing knows the boxer is only as good as whoever’s in their corner,” says Samm.
